Same-day Procedure

Minimal preparation is necessary for a mammogram. Many of our patients go home with results on the same day as their exam.

Potentially Life-Changing, even Life-Saving

Potentially Life-Changing, even Life-Saving

If cancer is detected in the early, localized stage, patients have a 99% 5-year survival rate on average. If the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, patients have an 85% 5-year survival rate on average.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Preparing for the Procedure

Inform your doctor regarding any personal or family history of breast cancer. Disclose prior surgeries, hormone use, and other relevant medical information before the procedure.

During the appointment, you may require additional imaging, or even a minor procedure (see below). Keep in mind that additional procedures don’t necessarily indicate a problem.

What Is Mammography?

Mammography, also called a mammogram, is the standard screening tool to detect breast cancer. It uses low-dose x-rays for early cancer detection, which is critical for early detection and improving cure rates.

Why Get a Mammogram?

Mammograms

Mammograms can detect tumors before they can be felt:

Although monthly self-examination is still recommended, small breast tumors can take years to become large enough to feel. Regular screening mammography is still our best tool to detect breast cancer early.

Mammography

Mammography is the gold standard for early breast cancer detection:

Mammography is a non-invasive tool, leading the charge against breast cancer. Mammograms have helped reduce breast cancer mortality by up to 40% since 1990.

Breast cancer

Breast cancer can happen to anyone:

75% of breast cancer cases occur in patients with no personal or family history of breast cancer. All women are recommended to get annual screenings starting at 40 years old.

Mammograms

Mammograms serve two purposes: as screening methods for patients without any visible symptoms and as a diagnostic method for patients showing abnormal signs such as nipple discharge or a palpable lump.

Early detection

Early detection plays an important role in fighting all cancers, including breast cancer. When detected early, breast cancer has a better chance of being cured, often with less disfiguring treatments.

Benefits of Mammography

A mammogram involves a specialized device that involves a compression paddle. Two surfaces will be pressing your breasts from the top and bottom for examination. This is done to flatten out the breast tissue and allow easier visualization of the breast.

Women with sensitive breasts may feel discomfort due to the compression. Note that compression is necessary to obtain high-quality mammogram images. The machine will take images from different angles, which radiologists will analyze for cancer.

Make sure to schedule your mammogram outside the first few days of your menstrual cycle. Tender breasts can make the mammogram an unpleasant experience. If you think you’ll be sensitive to compression, we suggest scheduling your mammogram during the week after your menstrual cycle ends.

Take note of the following things before undergoing the procedure:

Do not icon

Don’t apply lotion, deodorant, powder, or perfume on the day of your exam. These products can interfere with results and lead to inaccurate results.

Symptoms icon

Do: explain any breast symptoms, pain, or problems you might be feeling at the time of your exam.

Doctor CD icon

Do: bring any film, CD, or documentation of previous mammograms not performed at our facility.

Recommendations icon

We recommend wearing a two-piece outfit such as shirt and pants as well as flat shoes to stay comfortable.

Meet Dr. Eka Rozentsvayg, one of our nine fellowship-trained breast radiologists.

Originally from Russia, I earned my medical degree from UMDNJ, school of osteopathic medicine. I then graduated from radiology residency and received further training in breast imaging after completing a fellowship at Morristown medical center in NJ.

I have been practicing breast radiology in NJ for over 8 years, and in this time I have developed a strong connection and commitment to the community and our patients. As a dedicated breast imager, I find it rewarding that routine screening mammography can detect a tiny breast cancer before it grows. Coming from a bilingual and multicultural environment, I derive satisfaction and pride from my daily conversations and interaction with my patients, whose concerns and fears I try to put at ease using my expertise.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, biking and life-long learning through traveling the world with my husband and two kids.
